From February 17 – March 5, 2023, the world will come together with the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people of diverse clans and communities from "Down Under" to celebrate our LGBTQIA+ community!
This is the first time WorldPride is coming to the Southern Hemisphere!
Sydney's original Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras was held in 1978, and it didn't end peacefully for its first 53 marchers. A year later - the event grew to 3,000 who marched peacefully. It has since blossomed into one of the most progressive events in the world!
2023 brings WorldPride "down under" and while Sydney WorldPride is not replacing Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, it is akin to a 'Mega Mardi Gras.' 50,000 members of the LGBTQIA+ community will be there with bells on to celebrate. The Sydney Harbour Bridge will be closed for the historic Pride March - the first time ever for an LGBTQIA+ event!
The events will take place on the lands of the Gadigal, Cammeraygal, Bidjigal, Darug, Dharawal people who serve as custodians of the Sydney Basin. Always was Always will be Aboriginal Land.
The Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander people from a diverse Australian heritage will come together with the world to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community. The statement "Always was Always will be Aboriginal Land" acknowledges the sovereignty of Australia belongs to the "First Nations people who are still there and never leaving. The statement is in honor of resilience, survival, deep connection, and celebration."
Australia’s very own pop royalty and icon of our gay community, Kylie Minogue will be headlining the Opening!
