Gay Montverde
Located in Lake County on the southwest shore of Lake Apopka, Montverde was the site of a Native American settlement that began in 1865. The town was initially named West Lake Apopka and incorporated in 1925. It was later changed to "Monte Verde" which is Spanish for green mountain—tradition says a settler came across Lake Apopka and saw the rolling green hills.
Montverde is a small town of about 1000 people and has maintained its laid-back feel and rural charm. During the 1920s, the town is known for its grape industry but today, it is better known as the place where Snapper Mower was invented and the home of Montverde Academy.
