We have all heard conflicting ideas on how to “live in quarantine.” There’s the idea that we should come out of this stronger, smarter, leaner, etc. There’s the other side that says we should just do self-care and not put too much pressure on ourselves. So what’s the answer? Here at GayTravel, we find that balance is key, as it is with most things.

This year hasn’t gone as planned for anything, and it’s natural to be disappointed and frustrated. You aren’t alone, so don’t be hard on yourself when you’re feeling lonely or bored.

Channel all that energy. Pick one thing to do every day, so you’ll have that sense of accomplishment and won’t fall into self-doubt or feeling like a “failure.” Your daily task could be keeping the dishes clean, walking one block around the neighborhood, doing five pushups or squats, or writing ten sentences in a journal.

Pick something you care about that makes your life better, and choose to do small increments of it every day. This way, you won’t feel overwhelmed by a list of tasks, and you also won’t feel “unaccomplished.”

Surviving quarantine means we have to take care of our bodies, minds, and spirits. Here are some ways to take care of yourself.

Indulge:

Not only does baking bring the satisfaction of a yummy treat—it also provides a sense of accomplishment! So get in that kitchen and start creating.

Move:

Exercise increases endorphins. We all know this, but sometimes it’s hard to get moving, especially when we’ve all been spending so much time binging Netflix (cough cough). Here are some ideas to get you started moving.

  • Walk around the neighborhood. The fresh air will do you wonders.
  • Stretch your body and loosens those tense muscles.
  • Workout!

Here’s a great workout from Hilton Playa del Carmen
(3 Rounds, 45 Seconds Each, 15 Seconds Rest):

  1. Push-Ups
  2. Squats
  3. Butt Kicks
  4. Tricep Dips
  5. Side Lunges

Relax:

  • Meditate—It’s less complicated than you think. Stop what you’re doing, put down the phone, and take five slow, deep breaths.
  • Use these breaths to envision your hopes and goals or encourage yourself. Repeating a one-sentence mantra or self-affirmation is an excellent way to start creating new thought patterns, especially when quarantine makes you feel anxious or brings on unhelpful self-doubt.
