The Westin Cozumel
Relax and recharge at this rejuvenating gay-friendly Cozumel hotel
Cozumel, Mexico, is a small island in the Caribbean Sea, located off the Eastern side of the Yucatan Peninsula across from Playa del Carmen.
It was originally settled by the Olmec even before the Maya. Cozumel has been inhabited for over millennia. Cozmels’ original inhabitants and many of its sacred temples were destroyed by Hernan Cortes and smallpox in the 16th century. Maya women would come to Cozumel to worship the fertility/moon goddess, Ix Chel, traveling by canoe from Playa del Carmen or Tulum in a fashion similar to many of today's visitors. The Maya gave the island its name. ‘Cuzam’ means “swallow” like the bird, and ‘lumil’ means ‘land of’ so Cozumel translates to “land of Swallows”. There’s also a handful of endemic species such as a raccoon, a fox, and a colorful species of toadfish that cannot be found anywhere else.
Today, it’s a popular cruise destination, and you'll often see Royal Caribbean ships in port.

Is Cozumel safe? Cozumel is considered one of the safest places to visit in Mexico. Its small island and laid back attitude are welcoming to foreigners and the LGBT community. However, just like visiting any other destination, it’s always smart to stay cautious. Always keep personal belongings close to you, and lock up any other important personal belongings in the hotel’s safe. Finally, stay vigilant and be cautious while on excursions. Getting hurt while hiking or snorkeling could be a nuisance that can spoil a good time while on vacation.
Don’t miss a chance to explore the other half of the island– underwater! Sea TREK helmet diving is a quick and unique way to experience life under the sea.
