Playa del Carmen is a quintessential tropical vacation spot where turquoise Caribbean water kisses the white sandy beaches, and the palm trees sway in the tropical breeze. Just thinking about this paradise makes us feel carefree, calm, and relaxed.

Where is Playa del Carmen, you may ask?

The picturesque coastal resort town is located in Mexico, about 45 minutes south of Cancún, in the municipality of Solidaridad in the state of Quintana Roo. It's also called the "Riviera Maya."

Playa del Carmen Mermaid StatuesCozumel, an island you may have heard of, sits off its shores to the East. Tulum is a mere 45-mile ride away.

What to do in Playa del Carmen?

The best way to see the area is to start by strolling along the Quinta Avenida, and on this 5th Avenue, there are no cars which make it especially enjoyable. The cobblestone promenade runs along the beach and has plenty of shopping, dining, cafés, bars, clubs, and more to explore. The energy on the street is palpable, and it stays going all day and into the night.

Playa del Carmen Pride is usually held in June.  Another popular time to visit is around The Day of the Dead or "Día de Muertos" or "Día de los Muertos."

While all of the sun, sand, and fun sparkling above, there is also a dazzling world under the sea.  Playa del Carmen is near the Mesoamerican Reef, also known as the Great Mayan or Maya Reef. It extends for almost 700 miles along the Yucatan Peninsula, down to the coasts of Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras. Snorkelers and SCUBA divers enjoy the wildlife's vibrant colors, including fish, sea turtles, shorebirds, and more.

What's the best-kept secret in Playa del Carmen? Maybe it's not a secret, but Rio Secreto is an underground river and cave system with stalactites and stalagmites dating back thousands of years. Adventurers will especially enjoy a day exploring this remarkable part of our planet.

The nightlife in Playa del Carmen is exciting, too, and you can dance the night away or take a more relaxed approach and sit back listening to some great live music. No matter what, you'll always find entertainment whether you head to the well-known gay nightclubs like Club 69, where you can catch a drag show, or more late-night spots like La Cueva Bar.

Of course, when it's time to rest, there is no more beautiful spot to do so than basking in the sun and lounging on the white, powdery beaches.
