I love to explore and find new options, under an hour travel, from my base in New York. This time I was quite intrigued by the fact of finding a real castle right in the Hudson Valley, only 45 minutes by train from Grand Central Terminal. Exploring a charming town, enjoying spa treatments and ending my day over a gourmet dinning experience, sounded as the perfect plan and excuse, to get away on a one-night Sunday stay at the Castle Hotel & Spa.
Castle Hotel & Spa sits majestically atop one of the highest points in Westchester County overlooking the Hudson River amid sprawling acres of manicured gardens and grounds. With over 100 years of history, the Castle is undoubtedly a sumptuous escape to the enchanted era of America’s Gilded Age. The Castle’s luxurious guestrooms, suites with wood-burning fireplaces and lavish amenities, continue to be a favorite among dignitaries and celebrities.
My journey/weekend began at Grand Central Terminal, taking the Metro North Train on a scenic ride to Tarrytown. 45 minites later, I spent a full hour exploring this quaint little and very quite town, and doing one of my absolut favorite activities, Antique shopping. Right after, I did a quick stop for Brunch at Sweet Grass Grill, since I heard that their Crab Benedicts and Bloody Marys were worth trying.... Once done, I was ready to head to the castle to being my royal experience, at this 19th century Norman-style castle-turned-luxury hotel. Frist stop THANN Sanctury Spa for an relaxing one-hour facial, followed by lounging time with amazing views at the relxation area and a session of jacuzzi and steamroom.
Four hours later and with my skin glowing, I checked in at my room and got ready for cocktails and dinner at award-winning restaurant EQUUS, with my fellow travelers. The castle is just marvelous. Built in two stages between 1897 and 1910, by well respected newspapermen and well noted social figure, General Howard Carroll. Member of the Small Luxury Hotels collection and Historic Hotels of America, in 1981 the town of Tarrytown designated the Castle, which was imported stone by stone from Europe, as a historic landmark. I always say that my way of travelling is, as a backpacker during the day and as a Queen at night, and this time I was indeed the Queen of my castle.
Cocktails were served at the General's Bar, and of course I was way ready for my signature Filthy Vodka Martini. From there we stroll across the Tapestry Room, onwards to the Oak Room and our table for five, at the beautiful Garden Room of EQUUS Restaurant. Equus is the Zagat-rated winner of Five Stars by The American Academy of Hospitality Sciences. A unique and creative Auberge-style natural French cuisine based on locally sourced ingredients presented with innovative seasonal menus. We truly enojoyed a lovely evening.
Following morning, at 9AM sharp we enjoyed breakfast with a wonderful winter scene. Right after, took a car to Tarrytwon Station, to head back to Manhattan. By 12 noon I was home working. Such a great way to spend a Sunday relaxing with friends or on a romantic escape. Castle Hotel & Spa, is very popular for weddings and special celebrations. Hope you have enjoyed my brief report. Next stops for me are Mexico DF and Paris for Fashion Week, so stay tunned. Carlos Melia - Luxury Travel Curator. Travel Agent, Travel Blogger and Concierge.
